How can this affect a teenagers mentality when he/she grows up?

If one feels like they are not loved for or if no one cares about them and they are affected by negative people and harsh critizement, and if they dont fix it, how well they end up as adults? can they develop a mental illness? How can this affect a teenagers mentality when he/she grows up?
My belief is that they grow up with emotional scars that they don't try to overcome or don't know how to and by dwelling on them, it can make a person appear to be mental and some may actually delve into mental illness although I don't think most are actually mentally ill.

I have seen cases where people grew up in a dysfunctional/unloving home but overcame it because of people they chose to get involved with later who helped them see the other side of the coin and were able and willing to change themselves into better people.

Too many people are under the assumption they can't be happy without someone special in their lives or lots and lots of friends. What they fail to learn is one has to find happiness and love within themselves, otherwise they dwell on the past and become toxic and others don't want to be around them.

We each choose the path we walk once we grow up and get on our own.How can this affect a teenagers mentality when he/she grows up?
Watch the movie ';Nell'; with Jodie Foster and decide for yourself.
Yes, they definitely can.

The experience you are describing would lead to possible anger, bitterness, and isolation.

Such feelings can lead to irrational behavior, including violence toward others or suicide. They could develop Clinical Depression, General Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, and probably a host of other disorders.

However, if such a person seeks help, they can certainly overcome such circumstances.
sounds like just about everybody i know, so i guess the chances are that you could end up like anything.

tell you a secret, the things you think make a person are superficial, job, money, hair, hot body. you can have any and all of these and be neurotic as all get out. You can sit on the banks of the river poor and find contentment. lifes wierd, tommorow, there's chocolate!
Check out some of these questions and answers that should give you a very good idea. To answer your question, Yes.
Don't worry, most teens feel like that. They could develop problems or they could have relationship troubles in the future, but like I said, everyone feels like that as a teen and just about everyone grows out of it. It's just about realizing that it's a phase and knowing things will eventually change. It's when you dwell on it and think that like will always be that way that it turns into a problem.
Its likely, depends on their outlook.

Some subjected to harsh situations can end up being overly appreciative of their surroundings and things, others can be really resentful and bitter, it really depends on their outlook on life. Its a glass half full or half empty kind of thing....

my partner and i were subjected to very similar conditions as children and he is a very appreciative person whereas i play the blaming game.

As for mental illness..... its possible, every blow to a persons self esteem or wholeness is detrimental, sometimes they just crack! The best thing for this person is to get out of the situation they are in, to improve their surroundings.... after all, a person does not completely develop their personality till around the mid 20s..... if there is something wrong, there is help around... i guess it just depends on whether they want the help or not.
