Do teenagers need to get flu shots?

I heard that it's only for old people and really young babies. Are teenagers supposed to get it?Do teenagers need to get flu shots?
Then you've heard only half the information. Flu shots are also recommended for anyone with respiratory compromise or a compromised immune system (FluMist nasal vaccine) no matter what the age.

To Miss Leelabee, I think you're a nursing student and not a nurse. You must not word your answers to give the impression that you are other than that. ';Nurse in school'; is not the same thing as ';nursing student';.Do teenagers need to get flu shots?
Thanks for choosing my answer as the best one. I hope I was able to help you decide whether or not you need a flu vax.

Getting immunised for influenza can be done at any age. It is just as contagious no matter what your age. However, the severity of the disease depends on your immune system. The elderly, the very young and the immunocompromised are at the most risk of dying should they contract a severe strain of the disease. The chances are, if you catch influenza, and you are fit and healthy, then you will be quite unwell, but highly unlikely to die from it, if sensible precautions are taken. Also, getting immunised when it is not necessary, such as giving it to every high school student, is just using up a finite resource and driving up the price for those who might actually need it.

Note : the strain of influenza changes a lot, and the immunisation is against the strains which are considered the most likely to be around at the time; it is not guaranteed to be 100% effective.

Hope this helps
Everyone is should get a flu shot except those with compromised immune systems.
unless you you haven't yessss
I would recommend it..everyone has a different immune system..a lot of people get sick. We are supposed to give flu shots to the high schoolers at our local school coming up when the serum comes in. (I'm a nurse in school)
of course they do
Nobody is really ';supposed'; to get it. It is RECOMMENDED to some people.

Very young and old people are very susceptible to 1- getting flu in the first place and 2- it killing them.

This is because of their weak immune systems.

They also say people with ';compromised'; immune systems should get it. You might think you're not very healthy or strong but this means only if you are REALLY ill. Like having AIDs, getting chemo etc. I think sometimes people with diabetes get recommended to get a flu jab too.

There is a risk of allergic reactions etc so you should only get it if you are recommended. Ask your doctor.

There is a reason why teenagers don't need to get it and one reason is you're extremely unlikely to get complications from it and if you do there is slim/zero chance it will kill you.

You are able to fight it off. Pneumonia is a complication of the flu and you know how often old people get, and die of pneumonia.. Compare that to how many teenagers ?

edit: Also we shouldn't over-immunise. If too many people get it then the viruses will begin to adapt and become super viruses, for which there will be no vaccine. Oh yeah like the last poster said you can still get the flu even if you are immunised.

So if you consider all that, it doesn't make any sense for a teenager to get it.
If they have asthma or other sickness then it would be a good idea. But most the time teenagers do not need them. At least that what the doctor tell you But you can call the health department in your area and just to be sure.
You are correct that older people and babies are much more prone to getting the flu. However, getting a flu shot doesn't hurt you once you think about it. Would you rather get a needle in your arm or a disease (the flu) that often kills people.
Hmm... Duh... if you don't get a flu shot you could get the flu everyone is exposed to it!!! YOU COULD DIE
If you have a normal immune system, the general rule of thumb is that flu immunization's are suggested but not really necessary. The very young and elderly tend to have weaker or underdeveloped immune systems and therefore will tend to have a much worse time dealing with a flu than a person of full development. So, if the teen has an immune system syndrome or disease, go for the shot for sure.

Remember, it's been less than a hundred years since the last rampant flu outbreak in the US, and that flu killed literally one in five persons. It's treatable these days, but can be extremely serious if left untended!
vaccines are poison. no one should get them
You can if your parents want you to. Docs suggest the elderly and babies (and anyone with a lower than normal immune sysstem) to get the flu shots because they are more susceptible of getting seriously ill if they get the full blown flu because their immune systems aren't like that of say a healthy teenager.
maybe..idunno my friend did and shes a teen if that helps
