When Prince William and Prince Harry were teenagers why didn't they ever speak?

I don't recall one moment on tv when I actually heard either of them speak during their teenage years. The first time I saw that happen was when prince William was 18 or just over it. Is it because there might be something in royal etiquette about this? When Prince William and Prince Harry were teenagers why didn't they ever speak?
I suppose the royal family wants to keep their children away from the spot light until they could handle the media and the pressure. Prince William was known to be extremely shy, and he used to hide behind his classmates and parents. Now that he is taking on more and more royal duties, he has become more social, and acts more natural at press conferences, interviews, and making public statements etc.

I don't think royal children are supposed to be making public speeches before a certain age, since the media and reporters can be very sneaky with regards to asking ';personal questions.'; They must be taught how to answer these questions properly, and not many children can handle such things at a young age. When Prince William and Prince Harry were teenagers why didn't they ever speak?
Thankyou dear, great answer.

I don't think it's etiquette.......most likely for p.r. purposes as they weren't mature enough to think before speaking.
Buckingham Palace and the media made a deal to leave the two boys out of the media glare soon after the tragic death of Diana. The paparazzi were held in a very poor light then. They bore some moral responsibility for the car crash.

As the boys reached adulthood, they were ready to take on their more public rolls, which meant granting interviews about whatever project they want publicized.

There is nothing in ';royal etiquette'; about this;and with the media being rife with stalkerazzi photographers, there is no such thing as etiquette in the media!
For Pete's sake! Press intrusion killed their mother, and you wonder if ';royal etiquette'; was the reason why they weren't shoved into the press spotlight during their childhood?!?

After the death the Press was in a somewhat subdued mood, because they all knew how they had whipped up the public hysteria about Charles, Diana and the whole deal. Charles and the royal household got them in a headlock and got them to agree to lay off the boys and not intrude on their lives till they had finished their education. Which deal was more or less kept.
their parents (especially diana) were trying to shelter them from the media and the public eye.
Probably, or maybe because anything they say could be misconstrude, and then ruin the reputation of the royal family. thanks media :\
