The only things that distinguish anime from typical TV fare in America is that it's (a) animated and (b) from Japan.





The content is superior to what is available over syndicated tv in America: it features better storylines, and *complete* story arcs that come to an actual conclusion. Compared to American TV, it's more akin to reading a book than some money-grubbing show that is endlessly jumping the shark.





There is also a lot of age-appropriate content that features a wider range of genres than is found on network tv. Girls love the romance shows, and you don't find that at all in America. I've never even heard of a show that compares with Lamune, Ashituruze Baby, True Tears, or Myself ; Yourself being aired for kids in the US.





Content creators and providers in the US are fixated on ';animation = comedy';. You find this broken a bit in movie form, and there have been some violent shows (ala Aeon Flux), but it's a rarity to see anything but comedy in animation.

See little kids stuff is dumbed down for better understanding of children.


Adult stuff is to boring to us kids.Teens still love the supernatural and magic even if we are to old to believe in it. We like exciting things which can easily come in a animated series :)
Teens watch anime for a lot of reasons. Action, adventure, horror, adrenaline rush, obsession with the opposite sex, and sometimes comedy. Also, some teens love blood, gore and death.
Because anime has better animation, well designed characters, a story (because all american cartoons are 100% filler), perfect fight scenes and an overall more serious tone than western animation.
Because most games these days have anime-type characters.
cos it's more serious than little kid cartoons and less serious than watching the news. Perfect balance!!
