In a city close to where i live 17 teenagers have hung themselves in the last year, why could this be?

Thats over 1 a month and they all age from 13-21 do you think there is something more to this? and what could it be?In a city close to where i live 17 teenagers have hung themselves in the last year, why could this be?
The Bridgend story has cropped up a couple of times over in the Psychology section. I can repeat what I and some others have said there.

It isn't suspicious - Lucky Man 2 posted that ';National statistics show the national average is 15 per 100.000 in Bridgend it is 17 in 130,000. Not much difference overall its the concentration that is worrying.';

And I have to agree. I imagine being young and living under the scrutiny of the media must be pretty awful for anyone in the Bridgend area right now and I think it's irresponsible for anyone to lay blanket blame on ';the internet';. Lookup The Werther Effect - it's a bit like dominos I suppose. For example, when someone famous commits suicide you tend to get an increase in copycat suicides. The danger with the Bridgend cluster is that continued media focus may increase the likelihood of further suicides... feeding the hysteria so to speak. Stay strong.In a city close to where i live 17 teenagers have hung themselves in the last year, why could this be?
BECAUSE they are stupid!!!

let em kill themselves, as long as they dont kill others.

its better they kill themselves then end up shooting up schools.
I seriously believe in demonic strongholds and curses. This place seems to have something of that affect going on.
It's hard to tell. Teenagers have a lot of undue stress. They stress themselves out over their looks, weight, romantic interest and lots of other things. You didn't say how big the city was. The bigger the city the bigger the chance of dealing with suicides.

These suicides would have to be looked at a lot more closely than i can, to do a analysis about them. Most cities have people at the police dept. that deal with people who are concerned about these things, and give them some answers to help them ease their minds.

The idea of a possible serial killer crosses my mind which i hope it is not. This is something that the police may not tell you cause they not ready to alarm someone if it is in fact a concern of theirs.

You also didn't say if you knew any of them or their family's.

Or if there is anything connecting them, such as going to the same school, on a sports team or live in the same neighborhood. All these can help to solve the question.
The Bridgend suicides are awful, I've been reading about them in the paper. No-one seems to really know what is causing it, whether it is a cult, or a pact, or whether it is a desperate cry for attention/ recognition. It's causing a huge stir about the safety of the internet and the stresses put on teenagers today ( i know how they feel, I'm 17!) This is a really interesting question, i hope someone can answer it better than me!
Aparently it was a suicide pact =s
well the 27th marks the anniversary of my 12 year old brothers suicide. he hung him self also. he had depression and we were getting him help but it wasnt enough. some people are just very unhappy
i read that you can access a website on how 2 kill yourself..its sounds awful.it gives a list of ways a how mch pain they wud go thru
Being a teenager is such a hard time and many suffer from depression for many reasons such as not fitting in or a bad home life. I think that many things could contribute to this. I would also consider the possibility that there is other things like not being able to live up to their parents expectations especially at that age where college is coming up and the need for acceptance of parents is truly important.

I also know that there are many websites like already mentioned that do promote suicide, which is so sad. Also maybe those children had a pact to do such a horrid thing.

Also you may not know but maybe they were on an antidepressant that made it more possible for them to kill themselves. You see when you are already depressed if you start taking an anti depressant the first thing that happens is you are first more alert and active BEFORE the anti depressant portion kicks in and those who were suicidal are now alert enough to plan it and do it before they were able to get the help that these drugs can provide.

Ultimately there is no way to know for sure why but here are just a few of the many different things that could have contributed to these horrible deaths!
There is a small town where I live which has the highest suicidal rates in my entire state. I'm not sure why, however it could be because the schools are bad exc.

Some towns have really bad schools and some really horrible people and this makes teens very upset and they will end up suiciding if nothing happens. I know if I left my daughters at school any longer thats exactly what they would have done I wasn't going to risk losing them.
I never heard of this until now and I decided to look it up.

Personally I cannot understand this at all. I understand the mentality of being depressed but I do not understand this ';trend'; as they call it. I graduated highschool 3 years ago and in my 4 years in highschool there were 3 suicides in my highschool alone. It was a huge thing, we were all shocked at the amount of deaths from suicide just from our highschool. The ';Bridgend suicides'; is too much to even try to understand. I found a very interesting and disturbing quotation from the article I read about the Bridgend suicides.

';A friend of the victims, Anne-Marie Eagle, 17, said that suicide had become such a fixation for local youngsters that she had considered it herself.

She added: ';It has become a trend, it has become a cool thing to do in our area - I have thought about doing it myself';

I feel very sad for the families that have to deal with this.
o yeh i heard about this on the news personally i think it could be 2 things

the first i think could be something like the internet where people are convinced they want to die

the second i think could be that as all the people may have known each other that they were upset about it and then killed themselves because they wondered why all there friends were perhaps
They hanged themselves because they chose to. Maybe it was part of a cult thing or something, but ultimately, the choice was theirs. We can offer counseling, help, and whatever to suicidal people, but in the end, the choice is theirs, and there's nothing we can really do to stop someone from committing suicide.

No matter what the excuses are, people don't have to commit suicide. No matter how bad things are, someone's had it worse and didn't go that route. They chose to make things better.
I wish there were obvious reasons for things like this, but sometimes there's not. By the way, pet peeve of mine- people are hanged, clothes are hung. Just so you know.
there is really no right answer to that.The internet can be a awful place if you use it that way.I'v heard of websites that try to convince tenns to kill themselves because nobody cares about them.it's really sad and scary when you go through maturety.sorry about the spelling.Teens can think at times that if they kill themselves everything will get better.It doesn't.For all the teens out there,Please don't even think about it.
